Summer Sermons

Behold!—it is a word rarely used in our culture but it is a thoroughly Biblical word, used over 1200 times and in 52 of the Bible’s 66 books.  ‘Behold’ is a formal but penetrating way to say, “Look at that,” “Check it out,” “Take it all in,” etc.  It is often used with force as if to say, “Can you comprehend the magnitude and greatness of this?”  ‘Behold’ is what you do when you see your wife on your wedding day proceeding down the aisle toward you; ‘behold’ is what you do the 1st time you see your first born child; ‘behold’ is what you do when you first stand over the Grand Canyon or look up to the Rocky Mountains.  In essence, you behold what you treasure, value, stare at, adore, enjoy, and that person or thing reciprocates by providing you joy and delight.  In 2 Corinthians 3.18, Paul tells us that as we ‘behold’ Christ, we are transformed from one degree of glory to another.  In other words, when we behold Christ, we ourselves become something to behold.  This summer, take time to behold the greatest of all treasures, take time to behold Jesus in ways you haven’t yet imagined, and take time to behold how God Himself can be the substance of your joy, delight, desire, and satisfaction.
