What is 20:28 Serve Our City?

Once a year we gather as a church family to serve organizations and people in our own neighborhoods in the greater St. Louis area.  In the weeks leading up to the event, we consider what it means to serve our neighbor as we PREPARE for our day of serving.  On Saturday, friends and family gather for prayer and then disperse throughout the St. Louis area to SERVE our community.  The weekend closes Sunday morning as we CELEBRATE all God has done.

When do we serve?

20:28 Serve Our City takes place during a weekend in June. This day of serving functions as an entry point for partnering with local ministries, organizations, neighbors and friends throughout the year.

20:28 Spotlight

Our spotlight is not on any one ministry or organization, but on the factor that is shared by all the organizations and people we seek to serve: we are their neighbors.

When the Pharisees asked Jesus, “who is my neighbor?” in Luke 10, He told the Parable of the Good Samaritan.  The “good neighbor” in this    parable was the one who served the broken; not just for a day or with merely physical service, but with a long-term relational commitment based on unconditional love – he served with grace.  The Samaritan took this broken and bloodied man to an inn, put his needs on his personal tab, intending to return and provide help for as long as necessary.  This suggests a commitment to both physical aid and relationship.

In this parable, Jesus implies that He is the Good Samaritan, the One who rescues us from physical death and infinite relational distance from God. We are called to reflect that same unconditional love to our neighbor.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • In what ways has God been a good neighbor to me?
  • Who is my neighbor?
  • Where can I reflect the love God has shown me and help my neighbor?
  • How might God use me in this relationship?
  • How can I love and serve them after 20:28 officially ends?
